Applications are invited for the post of consultant in the Histopathology. This is a new full time post and will expand the team of consultants to 22. It is part of an ambitious recruitment program over the next 5 years to develop strong specialist, academic and research activity with existing and evolving opportunities within the Trust and University. Our vision is to create a large and diverse department to provide individuals with personalised and flexible working patterns to support their professional interests and development.

The Histopathology team work in a purpose built modern, light and airy building on a green field site which has been commended for its design and infrastructure by external assessors. It is next to the research park and university campus in close proximity to the sports park equipped with a gym and pool. Each consultant has their own office with up to date IT equipment including voice-recognition software.

Workload is controlled by an innovative ‘pull’ system allowing consultants to choose and protect time dedicated to reporting, teaching, research and SPA activates. Plans for digital pathology are being developed to aid flexible working, teaching and research.

The working environment is supportive and friendly; there are good relations with both clinical colleagues and academics at the UEA. The department and subspecialist teams support new consultants to help them adjust into their roles, gain experience and explore their interests. We have a newly opened Biorepository and are involved in the collection of samples for the Genomics England 100,000 Genome Project. The laboratory is UKAS accredited, fully staffed and BMS cut-up is well established. Private practice and work for HM Coroners are optional extras. A number of consultants work part- time and we actively encourage flexible working to ensure a healthy work/life balance.

As a university teaching hospital we have developed our research and development strategy in partnership with the University of East Anglia. We also work closely with our partners on the Norwich Research Park and Norwich Radiology Academy to take forward our ambitious targets for research and development. We strongly encourage applications from individuals looking to initiate or develop academic and research activity in the department.

In particular the Quadrum Institute housing one of the largest endoscopy facilities in Europe is due to open in mid 2018. The vision of this new and innovative project is to create new interfaces between food science, gut biology, human health and disease, capitalising on the world-class bioscience cluster based at the Norwich Research Park. Scientists working with clinicians will work closely with major national and international funding bodies and charities, collaborators and investors to ensure translation of our fundamental science to benefit patients, consumers and wider society.  The mission of the Quadram Institute is to understand how food and the gut microbiota are linked to the promotion of health and the prevention of disease, with an emphasis on diet- and age-associated diseases.   Histopathologists with an interest in gastrointestinal pathology may therefore find this a very exciting venture.

The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides a full range of acute clinical services through the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (1,000 beds) and Cromer and District Hospital, including more specialist services such as oncology and radiotherapy, neonatology, orthopaedics, plastic surgery, ophthalmology, rheumatology, paediatric medicine and surgery. Our staff of over 7,000 treat more than one million patients; people from Norfolk, neighbouring counties and further afield. Our patients are referred to us by around 100 local GP practices but also from other acute hospitals and primary care trusts around the country.

Norwich is a ‘fine city’ with a beautiful city centre, castle, two cathedrals and two universities. Housing costs are reasonable and its suburbs were recently described as the one of the most desirable place to live in England. It has excellent schools and leisure activities including walking trails, nature reserves, woodland, outstanding beaches and water sports, easily accessible both on the Broads and at the coast. There is also a vibrant arts scene including an annual festival of music, literature, poetry and performing arts. The local airport provides regular flights to and from Europe.

Come and visit us; we will offer overnight accommodation and an evening meal to allow time for you to get to know us, the city and the county better.
